4 The Cause (포 더 코즈)
독일을 근거지로 활동하고 있는 혼성 4인조 그룹 포 더 코즈의 앨범이다.
이들은 활동은 독일에서 하고 있지만 원래 미국 시카고 출신으로
당시 쇼티(Shorty, 13세)와 미즈 레이디(Ms. Lady, 16세) 두 소녀와
베이스를 맡은 비 제이(B.J, 15세), 드러머 제이맨(J-Man, 15세)의
두 소년으로 이루어져 있다. (지금은 성인의 나이로 훌쩍 넘어섰겠지요)
이들의 앨범 타이틀은 수록곡의 제목이기도 한데 우리 귀에도 익은
벤 이 킹(Ben E.King)의 Stand by me를 리메이크하고 있어 눈길을 끌고 있다.
최근의 팝 음악계에 대해 리메이크와 샘플링을 빼고 나면
건질게 없다는 혹평을 하는 이들도 있지만 리메이크도 또 하나의 간접 창작행위로 본다면
별 무리없이 넘어갈 수 있는 일이 아닐까 싶다.
각설하고 이들이 들려주는 소울의 고전 Stand by me(1964년 빌보드 싱글 차트 4위)는
원곡에 비해 템포는 느려졌지만 랩이 가미되고 베이스음이 강하게 들어가 있는데
또 다른 맛을 느끼게 한다.
